How to take a screenshot on iPhone and iPad

Most iPhone models: press Side + Volume Up at the same time. Older models with a Home button: press Home + Side/Top.

Works on iPhone and iPad. Extra options below for AssistiveTouch, Back Tap, Apple Pencil, and full page capture in Safari.

iPhone with Face ID (no Home button)

  1. Open the screen you want.
  2. Press Side + Volume Up together. Release quickly.
  3. Thumbnail appears in the corner. Tap to edit, or swipe left to save.

iPhone with Touch ID (Home button)

  1. Press Home + Side (or Top on older models).
  2. Tap the thumbnail to mark up or share.

iPad buttons

  • No Home button: press Top + Volume Up.
  • With Home button: press Top + Home.

On some cases you may need to press both buttons at the exact same time. If the power menu shows, try again a bit faster.

Full page (long) screenshot in Safari

  1. Take a screenshot as usual.
  2. Tap the thumbnail.
  3. At the top, choose Full Page.
  4. Tap DoneSave PDF to Files. Full page saves as a PDF in the Files app.

Full page works in Safari and some apps with long content views. It saves to Files, not Photos.

Ways to capture without buttons

AssistiveTouch

  1. Settings → Accessibility → Touch → AssistiveTouch.
  2. Turn it on, then set Single-Tap or a custom action to Screenshot.
  3. Use the on-screen dot to capture.

Back Tap

  1. Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap.
  2. Pick Double Tap or Triple Tap → set to Screenshot.
  3. Tap the back of the phone to capture.

Siri

Say “Take a screenshot”. The image goes to Photos like a normal capture.

Apple Pencil (iPad)

  1. Swipe the Pencil from the bottom-left or bottom-right corner toward the center.
  2. Edit in Markup or save.

Change the corner action in Settings → Apple Pencil → Corner Gestures.

External keyboard shortcuts (iPad)

  • + Shift + 3 → full screen.
  • + Shift + 4 → opens selection tool.

Where your screenshots are saved

  • Photos app: Albums → Screenshots.
  • Files app: only for Full Page (PDF) captures saved from Safari or supported apps.

Edit or share

  1. Tap the thumbnail or open the image in Photos.
  2. Use Markup to crop, draw, blur, or add text.
  3. Tap Share to send to Messages, Mail, AirDrop, or other apps.

FAQ

Why does nothing happen when I press the buttons?

Press both buttons at the same time and release quickly. If the power menu shows, try again faster.

Can I take a long screenshot of a website?

Yes. After a capture in Safari, open the thumbnail and pick Full Page. It saves as a PDF to the Files app.

Can I capture without touching the buttons?

Yes. Use AssistiveTouch, Back Tap, Apple Pencil on iPad, or ask Siri.

Why is screenshot blocked in some apps?

Banking, video, or work apps may block it. Policy from your company profile can block it too.

Where do I find screenshots?

Photos → Albums → Screenshots. Full Page PDFs are in the Files app where you saved them.
